Ātene is a former village located up the Whanganui River from Whanganui. Originally called Warepakoko, then Kakata, it was renamed by the missionary Richard Taylor in the 19th century as a Māori transliteration of Athens.
Atene Kalolo is the First Lady of Tokelau and is President of the Atafu Women's Council. In 2019, she gave the opening speech at a summit in Tokelau aimed at empowering women to enter politics.
